The Federal Transit Administration gave $1.9 billion for Sandy-related upgrades including $40 million for the development of Moynihan Station. The funds are being used mainly to improve transit infrastructure to be more resilient against storms and flooding. This represents the Federal Transportation Administration's last portion of storm money for city-based transportation projects.
Other projects include:
· $600 million will be used to install perimeter barricades, upgrade drainage systems and improve pumping capabilities at 10 rail yards where trains are stored
· $301 million will be used to take steps to prevent flood water from entering the subway system at more than 500 openings system-wide — such as stairwells, escalators, sidewalk vents and manholes.
