GOVERNOR HOCHUL SIGNS LEGISLATION THAT PROTECTS AND EMPOWERS WORKING NEW YORKERS

SEPT. 6, 2021

While Labor Day will always be a significant day for union brothers and sisters throughout the country, today marks a historic day for New York State as Governor Kathy Hochul signed a legislation package that will expand the protection afforded working New Yorkers and further empower them – a pro-worker package that the New York State Laborers’ Tri-Funds has proudly help fight for.

“There is no question that the work zone speed camera legislation will help keep our highway workers and New York’s motorists safe,” said Frank Marchese Jr., Executive Director, New York State Laborers’ Health & Safety Trust Fund. “Work zone intrusions by speeding drivers occur far too often, and by signing this legislation into law, our elected officials are taking an enormous step forward to help ensure highway workers return home safely at night. Our organization thanks Governor Hochul for taking quick action to sign it into law, and the bill’s sponsors and long-time champions Senator Tim Kennedy and Assemblymember Bill Magnarelli for their hard work getting it across the finish line.”

“By signing an anti-wage theft bill into law merely weeks into her tenure as governor, Governor Hochul has sent a strong message that New York State will not tolerate the abuse or intimidation of the men and women we rely on to build our state,” said Patrick Purcell, Executive Director, New York State Laborers-Employers Cooperation & Education Trust. “This law ensures working New Yorkers are paid what they are rightfully owed, and holds those accountable who try to cut corners and circumvent paying the appropriate wages. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Governor Hochul for putting people above profits, and to Senator Jessica Ramos and Assemblymember Latoya Joyner for their steadfast support and advocacy throughout the process.”
